Sprinkler repair

Replace or upgrade your sprinkler controller

In most swaps you move each zone wire and the common wire to the new controller. Rachio says most installs take 30 minutes or less.

Check this first

  1. Photograph the old wiring and label each zone wire before you disconnect anything (Rachio wiring guide).
  2. Mount the new controller. Rain Bird ARC8 and Orbit B-hyve XR are rated indoor/outdoor; Rachio needs its weatherproof enclosure outdoors (Rain Bird, Orbit, Rachio).
  3. Connect the zone wires and the common to the matching terminals (Rachio).
  4. Pump or well? Rachio says a pump start relay is required and the pump must never be wired directly to the controller (Rachio).
  5. Check rebate rules before you buy. Many programs require an EPA WaterSense labeled model and some require pre-approval (EPA WaterSense list).

When to call a pro

Pump relays and line-voltage wiring are a job for a licensed pro. The EPA suggests hiring an irrigation professional certified by a WaterSense labeled program (EPA WaterSense).
