DIY install questions
Can I install a smart controller myself?
Often, yes. Rachio says most customers can install its controller in 30 minutes or less with no special tools, by replacing the old controller and plugging in the wires (Rachio). Rebate programs differ, though: some require a licensed contractor (see below).
What wires move over from my old controller?
Each zone wire plus the common. Rachio’s wiring guide walks through basic and advanced wiring (Rachio support). Orbit and Rain Bird controllers work with 24 VAC valves (Orbit, Rain Bird).
Can I mount it outside?
Rain Bird ARC8 and Orbit B-hyve XR are rated indoor/outdoor (Rain Bird, Orbit). Rachio needs its Weatherproof Enclosure for outdoor installs (Rachio).
What about wells and pumps?
Rachio says a pump start relay is required with a pump and the pump must never be wired directly to the controller (Rachio support). Pump relays connect to line voltage, so hire a licensed pro if you’re not comfortable with electrical work.
Do I need a licensed contractor?
Some rebate programs require a licensed contractor install or pre-approval before you buy, so check your program’s rules first. Find rebates by ZIP.
