Sprinkler repair

Sprinkler zone not turning on?

Usually it’s no water at the valve, no 24-volt signal reaching it, or a bad or clogged solenoid.

Check this first

  1. Test the valve by hand. Turn the solenoid (the cylinder with two wires) counter-clockwise ¼ to ½ turn. If water flows, the valve and water supply work; twist it clockwise until snug to shut it. If you have a master valve, open it too (Hunter, Hunter).
  2. Check the signal. With the station running, the controller’s station terminal and COM should read 24–28 VAC. Hunter recommends a trained professional do voltage tests (Hunter).
  3. Test the solenoid itself. At the valve, with the station running, the common wire and the solenoid’s power wire should read 24–28 VAC (Hunter). With power off and the solenoid disconnected, Rain Bird says a good solenoid reads 20–60 ohms; below 20 is a short (Rain Bird troubleshooting guide).
  4. Swap wires with a working valve in the same box to see whether the problem follows the wire or the valve (Hunter).
  5. Replace the solenoid if the right voltage reaches the valve but it still won’t open (Hunter).
  6. Clear clogged ports. Debris in the solenoid ports can stop a valve opening; try opening it with the external bleed screw (Hunter).

Converting an old indexing valve? The zone lines connected underneath it must be reconnected to the new electric valves. See the indexing valve conversion guide.
