How to add a zone to your sprinkler system

A new zone needs a valve, a free station on the controller, and a wire to the valve plus the common. Can’t run a new wire? A two-valves-on-one-wire module can help.

  1. Check for a free station on your controller. The Add-A-Zone module installs at an open station and lets two valves share one field wire with separate schedules (The Source).
  2. Plan the valve location: an accessible spot close to the area it serves, following your local building codes (Hunter).
  3. Install the valve with the arrow pointing in the direction of water flow. Use cut-thread nipples and Teflon paste; hand-tighten, then add ¼ turn with a wrench (Hunter).
  4. Run the wire and seal the splices with direct-bury waterproof connectors (King Innovation spec sheet, Southwire spec sheet).

Converting an old indexing valve? The zone lines connected underneath it must be reconnected to the new electric valves. See the indexing valve conversion guide.
